PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
by Sam Pallin, MD
Our 2005 AFTA National Trail Ride is history now.
I think all agree each year the ride has gotten better and better.
And this year was the best yet. None of us expected the overwhelming sight at the top of Belmont Mountain.
Several hundred acres of golden poppies blasted us in the face as we topped out the pass. We’ll try to post a picture on the web site for those of you who didn’t make the ride.
Friends and members came from California, Colorado, Missouri, Arkansas, and Illinois; New River, Phoenix, Mesa, Prescott, Tucson, Apache Junction, Camp Verde, Maricopa, Chino Valley,
Wickenberg, Queen Creek, Wittman, Buckeye, Flagstaff, Marana, Glendale, Rio Verde and Cave Creek.
The Cowboy Caterers and the Back Porch Band did a great job with the food and entertainment.
Raffles were held and folks won everything from horse treats to cash.
And Jeanette Green won the custom saddle. Next day she rode it.
It fits her horse and looks like a million dollars. Bonnie Andersen and Jan Walker take credit for the most successful raffle in our four year NTR history. A fringe benefit was the opportunity to build upon the wonderful relationship AFTA has developed with Penny Foreman and the
BLM.
It was a surprise to learn Penny was responsible for the Butterfield Stage Park, the site of two of our previous rides, and also the Belmont Mountain range in Tonopah where this year’s ride was held.
It is a matter of pride that AFTA has always made responsibility for our environment a priority.
Partnering with the BLM in the gentle usage of our federal lands gives us all great pleasure, and contributes to a secure legacy for those who pass this way later. If you didn’t make the ride this year apply early next year.
Don’t get left behind!
