NEWSLETTER - June, 2006

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
                              by Judy Kipen

Ahh, wonderful summer is finally here.  That means its time to hit the high country to escape the heat whenever possible!  The Lone Ranger’s ride is June 10 while our ride is June 17.  I’ll be up there, somewhere, just enjoying the cool pines!  If anyone wants to get in touch with me, just call either of my phone numbers.  If there is cell service, I will call you back.  Speaking of summer, we are very fortunate to have one of our AFTA long time members, Dr Thom Clark, give us some tips for your horse’s health during the summer months.  You can read his article in this newsletter.  Every month I try to address issues that I feel are of importance to our members.  Does anyone have a suggestion for future articles?

As most of you probably know, our Trail Coordinator, Jodi Franklin, is recuperating from surgery.  She is home but we don’t know if she will be able to attend the June ride.  We all wish her the best and hope to see her back in the saddle again real soon!

The location of our July ride depends on the condition of the forests.  If there are closures, we will have to ride in the White Mountains.  That is usually the last forest to be closed.  If Coconino forest is open in July, we may go there as it is closer.  Personally, I prefer to ride the Mount Baldy area in the White Mountains.  I have gone there every summer and its like home to me!  Here is a poem I wrote about it:

INDEPENDENCE DAY

I had some time off over the Fourth
So I loaded up old Smokey and headed North
The White Mountains was my destination
Their quiet beauty gives me a tingly sensation
I set up camp in my favorite spot
Saddled up Old Smokey and set off at a trot
A gentle breeze whispered in my ear
It was the sweetest sound I ever did hear
The morning sun caressed my face
All my cares and troubles seemed to erase
We climbed the Baldy trail so high
And paused to watch a hawk as he circled the sky
For these memories I feel I am blessed
They ease my soul when I feel stressed
