PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
                              by Judy Kipen

Springtime is in the air!  The flowers are blooming, bees are buzzing, snakes are getting ready to make their presence known.  Ahhh, springtime.  This means we are all looking forward to those wonderful trips to the mountains to escape the heat.

This is the time of year to do all yearly check ups.  Of course your horse is the first on the list.  Get those yearly shots up-to-date.  Don’t forget the important West Nile Virus shot along with the others. If you plan to travel out of state, you’ll also need a Coggins which is good for 1 year.  You’ll also need a health certificate, but that is usually only good for 30 days.  Check with the state you will be visiting. Its also a good time to get your horse’s teeth checked.

When that is finished, it’s a good idea to go over all that tack!  A good cleaning is a great way to make sure it is all in good condition.  Ok, now its time to check out the trailer thoroughly.  Take out the mats and check the floor boards before you give it a good cleaning.  Make sure ALL tires (including the accessible spare) are in good shape.  Make sure you don’t have any leaks around the vents on top, especially in living quarter trailers.  Take the trailer in to your favorite repair place and have them check the brakes and bearings.  I also find this is a good time to go thru the food items in the trailer and rotate them.  Check your medical kits for both horse and rider!  Don’t forget bute and Banamine . You’ll need plenty of sun screen, fly spray, fresh vet wrap, slicker and an easy boot!

Then there is your hauling vehicle! Its best to also take that in to your favorite repair people and have belts, hoses, tires, brakes and everything they think is important checked out also. Remember, when you’re on the road and have repair issues, it can be very costly and inconvenient. How do I know that? Hmmm…..

Until next month--Happy Trails!
